Having breathed life back into my ageing iMac I have loaded the latest vertsion of Xcode and to keep me off the streets thought I would attempt to make a start with an app for my iPhone
I am going to start off with simple switching and then see how far my depleting brain cells can take this subject

VS has tools to do cross platform development, that way when you leave iOS you can still run your app.

Hi gerritv,
Thank you for the pointer - I will investigate.
I am venturing to the other side of the tracks with this project into bandit territory so vertical learning for me!

I am going to evaluate open air line of site WiFi comms distance tomorrow - "Beam me up Scottie"
Along with Bluetooth Class 1 device 100mw range 100 meters, 328 feet
I think it's highly likely that I will end up using both WiFi and Bluetooth.
Perhaps WiFi from the iPhone to a Base Station located close to the user/iPhone , the base station acts as a repeater and broadcasts the commands on Bluetooth or perhaps 433Mhz packet radio to the model
